The vision of the DotSport® registry is to create a globally visible domain that embodies the different actors of the sports community.
Sport is a nearly universal value, associated with the physical development of human beings, with competition and performance. It benefits from a positive image in all cultures. If the worldwide success of competitions like the Olympic games or Soccer World Cup is any indication, all communities are proud of the results of their athletes. It is also one of the oldest activities of mankind. There are artefacts suggesting sporting activities took place in China in 4000 BC.
The sports community is large and global. It ranges from top international associations like the International Olympics Committee and Fédération Internationale de Football Association to millions of large and small sports clubs all over the world. Sports is also a large industry, ranging from individual and collective sporting equipment to media groups. The “.sport” domain can be naturally used by individuals, businesses, organisations as well as community groups, without constraining to a particular silo within the community, promoting a diverse and dynamic community within the “.sport” namespace. This matches well and is consistent with the multicultural and vibrant community in sports.
While current gTLDs tend to focus on a vertical groups (e.g. commercial entities, network providers, organisations, museums, cooperatives, etc.) or regional groups within the global Internet, “.sport” will embrace a horizontal perspective with a clear brand to reach and enrich the broad global community. Unlike ccTLDs also, which provides for a local audience, “.sport” will allow the user to express a community relevance.
“Sport” is a highly recognisable word that is short, easy to remember, versatile but specific and focused on the sports identity. It captures the essence of the community served and is a sustainable phrase that will not easily become obsolete. “Sport” is global, yet elicits a clear concept and coherence of the community, providing registrants tremendous value in establishing an Internet presence with global recognition and global significance.
“Sport” is also a word used in many languages. When we looked at the Wikipedia page on sport, we noticed that, out of 89, 31 languages used the exact word «sport» in Roman script, while 22 used variations on the «sport» word. Some other languages used the word «sport» spelled in other scripts but still with the same pronunciation.
The DotSport registry
The DotSport registry aspires to bring together the sports community. A dedicated domain can help cement a common identity that will be reinforced by the reinvestment of registry proceeds into programs using sport for the development of less favoured regions and the promotion of peace through sport in the world. The bylaws of the company include as a mission the “support of activities in accordance with the Fundamental Principles of Olympism, as defined by the International Olympics Committee”.
Further, the fact that the “sport” word and context in nearly ubiquitous will help cement this identity and strong visibility.
